Great Taste, the world’s most coveted food awards, which celebrates the very best in food and drink, has announced the Great Taste stars of 2018. Out of 12,634 products judged by over 500 professionals, Sussex Gourmand was awarded a 1-star Great Taste award, defined as a food that ‘delivers fantastic flavour’.
The judges praised Sussex Gourmand’s Parmesan and Nigella Seed Thins for their ‘delightful’ shape, crispness and flavour journey, starting with buttery cheese and finishing with gentle peppery warmth.
Proprietor Liz Wakefield, who appeared this year on the BBC food show Top of the Shop, with Tom Kerridge says:
“I created the thins as part of our canapé kits and artisan gift boxes, to complement our award-winning Sussex Bresaola and artisan condiments. They offer foodies something quite unique: as a one-off for enjoying as a super-tasty, original snack, starter or light meal, or as an easy way to create unique, delicious party canapés. I hadn’t envisaged they’d sell separately, but they have become really popular at farmers markets and this accolade is a wonderful acknowledgement of the work we put into flavour combinations.”
This is the second year that Sussex Gourmand has won a Great Taste award. Last year, our Sussex Beef Bresaola won a star and our Sussex Venison bresaola was one of the few to be awarded a prestigious two stars, which stands for ‘above and beyond delicious’.
Judged by over 500 of the most demanding palates, belonging to food critics, chefs, cooks, restaurateurs and producers, as well as a whole host of food writers and journalists, Great Taste is widely acknowledged as the most respected food accreditation scheme for artisan and speciality food producers. As well as a badge of honour, the unmistakeable black and gold Great Taste label is a signpost to a wonderful tasting product, which has been discovered through hours and hours of blind-tasting by hundreds of judges.
