We’re very chuffed to have won another Great Taste Award for our delicious Sussex Beef Bresaola. The much coveted one star recognises food that delivers fantastic flavour and just 36 UK producers (53 worldwide) won an award in the cured meats category.
The Great Taste Awards is the world’s largest and most trusted food and drink industry awards. Organised by the Guild of Fine Food, it has become renowned as the benchmark for fine food and drink. Judged by experts including food critics, chefs, restaurateurs, retail buyers, cooks, producers and a host of food writers, journalists and social media influencers 14,113 entries from 108 countries were blind-tasted in a rigorous judging process. A total of 37 food and drink producers from East Sussex won an award in 2021 including Sussex Gourmand.
Here’s how the judges described it:
An original blend of herbs and spices, rich in clove, has been used to cure this wafer thin beef. Great texture, melts in the mouth, and has a natural wood-smoke flavour.
Lovely looking pieces of beef with grassy fresh outdoor aromas. Lovely even cure over the surface of the meat. The salt is strong initially but gives way to the lovely rich beef flavours, and the spices seem to add a real intensity to the flavour of the beef, enhancing and lifting it.

So what makes our bresaola special? We believe it comes down to three things:

  • Provenance – we only use naturally reared, grass-fed Sussex beef, which has ranked highly for its quality since the 18th century.  Grazing maintains the South Downs landscape and wildlife, making grass-fed, naturally reared Sussex beef a really good choice of meat. And what better way to enjoy it than this superb bresaola?
  • Size – we’re a small business, which means great attention is paid to every detail, for every hand-crafted batch. From curing in hand harvested, sustainably produced sea salt with our unique blend of organically grown herbs and well-judged spices , to creating beautifully packaged hampers with a hand-written gift message and informative tasting notes.
  • Tradition – we are truly artisan in our approach, using traditional methods. No factory production, no additives. The meat industry uses sulphates and sulphites in most cured meat products, but we discovered through lab-testing that it simply makes the meat more pink – it adds nothing to the quality, and yet it has been linked to bowel cancer. So we avoid using it and instead use natural ingredients, organic wherever possible.
Our beef bresaola features in many of our Sussex hampers and gift boxes, including the delicious forest and field gift box, the forest and field hamper with Ridgeview fizz,  the forest and field hamper with Ridgeview fizz and solid pewter ‘oak leaf’ condiment spoons. It’s the main attraction in two of our under £50 hampers: Sussex Fields gift box, featuring our popular Field Canapé Kit, which reinvents the Italian serving of beef bresaola in 24 punchy bites and a solid pewter ‘oak leaf’ condiment spoon made by Sussex pewtersmith, Fleur Grenier and the new Sussex Gin Aperitivo gift box, comprising the Field Canapé Kit, Sussex gin from Chilgrove and a delicious vermouth from Albourne Wine Estate, which makes two lipsmacking Sussex martinis. It also features in our larger luxury hampers including the Sussex Gastrobox, the Immune Boost Gourmet Hamper, launched in response to COVID-19 and our Taste of Sussex Hamper.
You can of course buy bresaola packs on their own and we’re currently running a special three pack deal which includes free delivery.
